SSHS Students giving back to
their Community.
Residents of St. Stephen will be well equipped to face the winter ahead
thanks to Tricia Calder’s Human Services class. A group of students have put
together and organized a three week long event to raise as much winter
apparel as possible for handing out at the local food bank. “This is a great
opportunity for everyone to
participate,” said Calder, who hopes everyone
able will contribute. “Winter Wonder-Wear”, as deemed by Lydia Donahue, one
of the organizers, will accept donations from Monday, November 14th,
until Friday, December 2nd. Donations can be brought to and left
in homeroom classes where a designated garbage bag has been placed for
collection days. Students and staff are encouraged to bring in items of all
varying degrees, including; socks, hats, gloves, jackets, sweaters,
ski-suits, and children’s clothing.
Another school
wide project currently being under taken by Calder’s Human Services class is
Christmas boxes to be distributed within our community. Boxes containing
gifts for either a boy or a girl will be assembled by students partaking in
this event. “It’s open to anyone who wishes to fill a box,” stated Calder
while her groups went about various tasks. Both she and the class agree that
at this time of the year it is important to help out in any way possible.
Filling one of these boxes will help ensure that Christmas is bright for
everyone.
Spartans Football Season Ends Early.
This past
Saturday, the second overall St. Stephen High School Spartans hosted the
third overall Mathieu-Martin Matadors in semi-final football action. It was
a beautiful day for football, and what a day of football it would be. The
game got off to a slow start, before things picked up in the second half.
The Matadors had a two possession lead, but the Spartans clawed their way
back into it with time ticking down. However, it was not meant to be as the
Matadors scored with under one minute remaining taking the lead. The final
seconds ticked off the clock , causing a heartbreaking end to the Spartans'
season. "We didn't lose the game, we just ran out of time" said senior Jamie Smearer. The game was emotionally draining, as many of the Spartan seniors
were left in tears with the realization they may never play football again.
Coach Grant was proud of his team, and said "Remember the past. Embrace the
future". Standout players for the Spartans were Josh Dupuis with 10
receptions and over 100 total yards, Devin Elsemore with a punt return for a
touchdown, and Swade Ross with key rushes and a touchdown. On the defensive
side of the ball nearly the entire defense stood out at different points in
the game.
Next season
the Spartans will have big shoes to fill, as they will lose many seniors.
However, with up and coming players such as Devin Elsemore, Nate Lister,
Swade Ross, and Joel Mcleod a championship run seems like a possibility.
Numbers are looking like they could be low, so coach Grant is encouraging
returning players to "bring two friends" to meetings in the spring.
Unique Experience for Several
English Students.
St.
Stephen High Schools English 111 class had a very unique assignment to do.
The class has been reading Romeo and Juliet, a classic Shakespearean play,
when
their
teacher announced a new assignment. They were to re-create the Capulet
dinner party scene. The students were excited about their project and set to
work. They would be using the theater as their location of the party, and it
would be during their third period English class.
The students were broken up into
groups and each group was given a specific task to do to assist in the
party. There was a group for costume design and masks, one for food, one for
decorations and invitations, and one for entertainment and music. The
costume group designated colours for each family; the Capulets were to wear
red and the Montagues to wear blue. The group also designed the masks that
were to be worn at the party. Glitter glue and feathers were stuck onto a
mask template; each mask was unique. The food group was told to create
renaissance dishes, and they did so with skill. The group made authentic
foods such as rail road cakes with lemon glaze, rice pudding, and sand tarts.
The invitations that were created by the decorations group were well done
and hand delivered to each guest of the masquerade. The decorations that
they created were elaborate and beautiful; the theater was adorned with
gorgeous reds and gold, as well as with a throne. The entertainment group
presented a dance to the class, and played classical renaissance music
throughout the event.
On the day of the masque, the
students filed into the auditorium. They presented their invitation to the
masked stranger at the podium by the door, and were then directed to take a
seat at the table. Once the guests were all accounted for, the party began.
Luiza Heine, a Brazilian exchange student, gave a short presentation about
old age etiquette. Afterward, the students were directed to the buffet. They
ate and socialized until it was time for the entertainment group to teach
the class a simple dance, thus concluding the wonderful masquerade of Mrs.
Somers English 111 class.

Boys Football Now 3-1 After Victory!
On Saturday,
October 1, the St. Stephen High School Spartans hosted the Simonds High
School Seabees in soaking wet conditions for a game of afternoon football.
The Spartans got off to a slow start, and things only got worse as injuries
began
to take over. Starting running back Swade Ross and starting running
back/safety Josh Dupuis both were knocked out suffering knee injuries.
Starting centre Spencer Cleaves was also knocked out of the game with a hand
injury. However, this proved not to be a deciding factor as the Spartans,
strong in depth, stepped up to the plate. Joel Mcleod, "Mr. Touchdown",
stepped up big with four touchdowns. Devin Elsemore also had a big game with
key rushes. On the defensive side of the ball, the standout player was Asa
Mason earning Tim Hortons' player of the game. Despite rain and injuries,
the Spartans dominated racking up 59 points in a 59-12 victory.
Next week, on Saturday, October 8, at 1pm, the Spartans will travel to
Hampton to play the Huskies in possibly the biggest game of the season. It
has the potential to decide whether or not the Spartans will be hosting or
traveling to a playoff game later down the road.
